Artist statement
Laura van Gaans
My work revolves around finding stability in a world that is constantly in flux. We structure our surroundings to grasp reality, but at the same time, we are overwhelmed by the multitude of stimuli we have to process daily. Light, sound, and movement create a constant stream of information that sometimes manifests clearly, but often arrives abstractly and fragmentarily. This tension between understanding and overstimulation is central to my work.
I naturally have a photographic eye, which I use to frame reality. Photography helps me gain a grasp on my surroundings. I translate these images into works in which I play with perception and interpretation. Based on my ability to bring order to chaos, I seek in my work a way to create stillness within that chaos.
